In 1999, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved 0.75mg levonorgestrel tablets for use postcoitally as an emergency contraception (EC). In humans, physiologic studies have consistently found that levonorgestrel EC inhibits, delays, or modifies hormone profiles accompanying ovulation. The actual effectiveness of levonorgestrel emergency contraception has been estimated between 58% and 95% under different delays in administration.
